As she passed the third year of her marriage the Duchess of Cambridge has caused endless irritation and exasperation among the courtiers of Buckingham Palace and concern among members of the Royal Family who themselves have their own feelings of resentment and frustration with Kate’s behavior.

It has been four years since Kate and William married in Westminster Abbey and Kate is still struggling to take control of her own life as a royal duchess, which has begun to cause not just concern, but complete exasperation among the courtiers who are eager to be helpful and help Duchess Kate become a successful royal. It’s no secret now that Carole Middleton has become the mainstay of her daughter as Kate continues to struggle to adjust to married life as a royal consort. All this has triggered a backlash with the accusations of being work-shy and letting her family interfere in her married life as a consort being proven as accurate. The problem has not been able to remain private, but has been clearly been observed by the public and caused the reputation of the Duchess to suffer damage to her prestige. The Duchess is suffering from a drop of respect and affection that the public previously had for her.

It began during the engagement when after when the notorious ex-wife of Prince Andrew, Fergie, got recorded selling access to the Prince Andrew and it resulted in William reacting by banning Fergie from the wedding ceremony, the festivities, and making it clear that his wife-to-be would be protected by him from the corrupting influence of the Yorks. This did not go down well with the York princesses who experienced problematic run-ins with Kate in the past, while Kate was just a girlfriend and Kate had once asked the princesses to sit somewhere else at a fashion show, asking the princesses to relinquish their front row seats so Kate and Pippa could sit in the front and Kate invited Beatrice to a skating party, failing, deliberately in the view of many, to tell Beatrice it was a fancy dress theme event. Allegedly Kate teased Beatrice to the point of tears and William reportedly spent the next couple of days with Beatrice, pointedly leaving Kate out of the trip. Andrew’s scandal over his acquaintance with Jeffery Epistein, a Wall Street trader exposed as a pedophile sealed the distance. Andrew was there, the princesses were there, but Beatrice and Eugenie made it a point to dress in an almost farcical manner, attracting derisive remarks from fashion commentators, but in the end Princess Beatrice ended up selling her loopy fascinator for thousands, leaving the money to charity.

Kate’s resistance to joining the routine and rhythms of royal life have come as a jolting surprise, mainly since before the marriage Kate had shown an inordinate interest in going to the Balmoral estate, eagerly participating in hunting trips and other activities, even on the eve of her engagement announcement having her mother there as a treat. It was taken for granted in the mind of William that Kate would be an eager participant in the traditional shooting activities and adhered to the routines as laid out for centuries. The ten years that Kate dated William, she was moved slowly more into the center of the royal sphere and even was his escort at official engagements. As her twenties passed, Kate did seem to pick up knowledge of royal routines and various other understandings, which ensured that if William did decide to take the plunge, that Kate, would be groomed to fit in seamlessly and obey the requirements of a royal consort and member of the royal family. As an English subject, it was taken for granted that Kate knew her duty to the Queen and would know her duties as wife and consort of a future King of England.

It’s never been a secret that the House of Windsor is filled with wayward royals, but instead of bringing more stability and becoming a stabilizing factor in William’s fey habits, she has brought controversies of her own making that have caused surprise to the courtiers. The royals and courtiers thought that by coming from an intact, close knit family, Kate would recreate a healthy, quiet home life for William and bring in more healthy stability. Instead, Kate has been acting out in ways that have made many fears that courtiers had about Kate into an unpleasant, horrific reality. Instead of recreating a stable home life, Kate has been seeking out adventure and excitement of her own that has resulted in a new level of scandal. Warning signs began to show themselves during the early months of marriage when Kate allegedly adamantly refused to live on base with William, snubbed the club for the wives of other officers, and even went so far as to skip out on Wales and live it up in London, when she wasn’t visiting with her parents. She showed additional discourtesy to the Palace, snubbing the royal courtiers who were waiting for her to present a clear agenda for her future sponsorship of charities and a regular schedule of appearances.

As Kate tentatively reenters public life, the past several months have been filled with the courtiers cajoling, encouraging, and virtually begging Kate to take the work load off of the Queen’s elderly shoulders and start getting Prince William on the royal work track. It’s no secret that the Duchess of Cambridge has been increasingly self-isolating herself and her unhealthy attachment to her mother’s nurturing has caused bewilderment to the courtiers, who as a rule do not view royal life as centered on the self, but duty to the Sovereign. Kate’s indulgence of her attachment to her family in Berkshire has been causing courtiers to become resentful of the Duchess’ clear enjoyment of royal comforts and prerogatives, but her complete lack of effort of doing her duty towards engaging the public and most importantly, lifting the burden of duties from the shoulders of the Sovereign. Kate’s independent approach to her royal role hasn’t been one where she works on her own at making numerous appearances, but is instead filled in a manner of Kate not just dictating her schedule, but deciding if she is even going to work. Her erratic decision making process has resulted in events being scheduled and then canceled, including moments with Kate skipping out on more stately events in favor of a frivolous society gathering. Queen Elizabeth is touted as being in excellent health, but the insiders in the Palace know that the Queen won’t live forever and in fact, the burden that the Queen has suffered has grown increasingly filled with extra stressors.

One such stressor has been Kate’s exhibitionist tendencies not becoming a fluke accident, but a full clear signal that the Duchess of Cambridge seems to rather enjoy showing off her figure. At first it was considered questionable that she had decided to wear a low cut neckline to her own wedding in Westminster Abbey, causing several raised eyebrows, but since modern fashion is known by all to be revealing and daring, it was seen among fashion commentators that a rather daring neckline was well within keeping herself known as a modern royal duchess who would be sure to push boundaries in almost any area, while maintaining the basic dignity expected of a royal duchess. It was in fact, keeping well within the dress styles of other guests who were daring in their choices, with Victoria Beckham wearing full black, considered a fashion blunder under normal royal dress codes. After her wedding the Duchess returned to Wales with William and as far as anyone was concerned, Kate would assimilate into a way of dress that would ensure that the Duchess would be viewed with admiration and respect. Even during the Canadian and Los Angeles royal tour, insiders were more bemused and diffident about the Duchess’ accidental flashes of skin, viewing it as a natural happenstance at the runways at airports where planes are flying everywhere and whipping up wind, something that has happened to other members of the royal family at various times.

Yet, the situation stopped being viewed as harmless when the Duchess began wearing abnormally high hemlines, when she was in fact wearing upper thigh high skirts when she was in attendance with the Queen at the first festival that kicked off the beginning of the Diamond Jubilee festivities. This celebration was held up as sacred, since Queen Elizabeth has been only the second Sovereign in history to celebrate reigning as Queen, for sixty years on the Throne. Kate’s increasingly established penchant for sky high heels and seemingly higher hemlines to show off her slender long legs was considered eyebrow raising and highly inappropriate. It reportedly offended Prince Philip who was seen throwing her a blanket as they were chauffeured away and tension was caused when Kate breached protocol by walking in front of the Queen. After the stunt of asking for her family (and being granted) to be allowed to ride on the official float that the royal family was to appear on and wave to the crowds. What unnerved the courtiers the most is how Kate was (and still is) determined to promote her family and their interests at the expense of the Queen’s landmark, historical moment in modern history. During the time period of the Queen’s Jubilee, Kate continued to wear clinging or high hemline dresses, or gowns with a startlingly low neckline that showed more than was considered decent.

The concern for modesty isn’t just a holdover from Victorian era prudery, but a very real security concern. With the cynosure of public interest worldwide focused on the Duchess, it’s a known fact that there are unstable, dangerous people out there who often make a very real security risk. Secondarily, the Duchess’ preference for high hemlines and low necklines caused a stir among the conservatives of Malaysia and Singapore while the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge paid a state visit to the two countries on behalf of the Crown, on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee. Kate’s low necked Alexander McQueen gown ended up making her a negative contrast to the other more modest necklines worn by the other ladies in attendance and during a daytime reception she wore a Prabal Gurung dress that showed off her long legs, but left her looking considerably bare and allegedly offended the hosts with her immodest dress. The British ambassador was for a time in disfavor with the rest of the East Asian government officials and reportedly struggled to explain why the official representative of the Crown would dress in so unbecoming a manner.

Yet, the nadir of her string of immodest stunts (as they have now begun to be viewed) was when the Duchess was photographed at a villa in France. The timeline of the vacation is now known to be held right before their scheduled state visit. That the Duke and Duchess were even there was considered enough of a scandal, since the ducal couple were supposed to be preparing for their trip while living in Wales. The couple even refused to go to the 2012 Paralympics, begging off by claiming their need to be fully prepared for the Malaysia and Singapore visit on behalf of the Crown, so the Duke and Duchess were given permission to skip that duty and spend their time preparing. So with the Duke and Duchess caught out in a lie, it was indefensible, but the real, very real, scandal unfolded during the time when the Duke and Duchess were in the very conservative country of Malaysia. The irony was made even more poignant since the Duchess was visiting a mosque and had to deal with the knowledge that while she was dressed demurely in a blue chiffon day dress with a wrap placed neatly over her head, she was going to have to continue on stoically to her public appearances knowing that every man in the entourage and among the guests had viewed the photographs of her nakedness, full frontal, and were likely disgusted at her immodesty. This scandal was dealt with publicly by the Palace by doing what they could to preclude any publication via British papers (resulting in the firing of a handful of defiant editors), but by the time the Duchess had been quietly returned to the safety of her family home in Berkshire, on the international scene, the damage had been done. Pictures were publicized in Italian, French, and other foreign tabloid magazines.

In the eyes of the palace, what made the situation worse among the royal family is that it triggered William’s well known antipathetic behavior towards the media. William was already on edge after his marriage, getting worked up over the publishing of grainy photos that were claimed to have been him at his honeymoon and getting sensitive about what he viewed as unwarranted criticism of his new wife. The media is used to William’s temperamental ways, but William’s claims of press harassment bewildered the press and media attention backed off. They have been used to William’s antipathy to the media and view it as a reactive result of his mother’s death in Paris, but the reactive hostility towards the media in this case caused courtiers to warily eye Kate as a possible reason the Prince was so aggressive in his response. William developed hysterics, citing his mother’s death as a reason he wanted the press/media prosecuted and made numerous statements stating his fear that Kate would be dead at the hands of the media, allegedly like the late Diana, Princess of Wales. The palace closed ranks, but courtiers walked the halls with gritted teeth as they scrambled to save what they could of Kate’s carefully constructed clean reputation. It blew a hole in the carefully constructed façade and showed the public that Kate had not, as far as could be seen thus far, that Kate had not left her wild past behind. The palace had been working hard at cleaning up Kate’s past and trying to make her more acceptable to the higher echelons of British and international society and the French scandal singly blew their attempt to pieces. Kate was supported publicly by the Palace, of course, but in private courtiers were spitting nails that Kate had behaved so brazenly and with such irresponsible recklessness. To her enemies in society, it was just one unavoidable example that Kate was still the club hopping “Waity Katie” and that she was too common to join the royal family, much less as a royal consort.

William’s mother Diana has become a frequently used reference, a point of argument so Kate can avoid her duties, avoid being accountable to the Sovereign for her actions, and bypass numerous protocols and other routines. What courtiers know and still refuse to point out, is that Diana at the time of her death was not just being pursued by the press, but also in a car speeding over a hundred miles well over the limit and she was known to have not been wearing a seatbelt or engaging the services of a royal protection officer. Courtiers, eyeing Kate’s freewheeling behavior as a girlfriend of a prince and viewing her decade long refusal to get a job/career set up and established was cause enough for concern, but the reasons Kate offered up were jolting. Kate cited the media pressure and need to keep her royal boyfriend’s confidences, but Kate’s refusal to take any kind of charge or initiative to work around her circumstances caused concern. Instead of taking responsibility for her actions in France, for refusing to protect her reputation and maintain the dignity of her position, as well as exercising common sense, Kate egged on William to join her in blaming the media, photographers, the royal protection for not seeing and restraining the photographer, and started actively trying to censor publication as much as possible. What disconcerted the courtiers the most was how Kate refused to take responsibility for protecting her own reputation and knowing how to control her own behavior. Kate’s behavior was reminiscent of Sarah, Duchess of York; after the errant former royal wife was caught cavorting with her lover, John Bryan, Fergie reportedly blamed everyone but herself for the situation.

Another blow was sustained when the legal firm that provided free services to the royal family would no longer sustain the additional work for free and the royal family would have to end up paying for their legal services, ranging from contracts and various clerical work, to the additional load of having to handle the frequent battles against the media that William and Kate seem addicted to. Such a scandal, that a royal consort would be photographed full frontal is something that has caused a horrendous turning point and brought back Kate’s past as fairly immodest and much was made of her past where she would be photographed clothes askew and often her intimate area photographed by invasive paparazzi photographers who stake out the club scene where Kate was a fixture. As a girlfriend she had William’s support, but with her actions in the aftermath of the nude scandal, she ended up using the legal team that the palace keeps on retainer in an unprecedented scope. Editors from a handful of counties in the United Kingdom were dismissed from their positions in the media and allegedly, the accused French photographer was jailed in France (although whether or not the photographer in question was even at the scene in the first place is up for debate) and even royal protection was heavily criticized, despite the fact that their job as outlined requires them to look for active physical threats to their security, not photographers or eccentric tourists.

It is not just the problems that William has with the public and media, but with the royal family as well. She’s preferred to spend holidays with her family and William has been indulgent, most often at the expense of his time with his own family. This has caused resentment among the royals, who only gather together en masse during the holidays of Christmas at Sandringham and summers at Balmoral lasting only a couple of weeks at most. Until the wedding, the royal family was at last stabilizing and prepping to make a place for Kate at their table and have her move smoothly into the royal routine, but instead, Kate cajoled William into skipping Balmoral in favor of time alone together and only went to Sandringham for Christmas as required. It was hoped that Kate as a royal bride would bring out a more sociable and hardworking William out of the often elusive prince that William has always been. Unfortunately the Duchess has perversely been a more alienating factor. Despite public politeness, the royal family has begun to distance themselves from the Duchess of Cambridge; the combination of the Duchess’ preference for her family and a leisurely lifestyle has caused resentment among the harder working members of the royal family and the courtiers are becoming frustrated and tired of trying to get Duchess Kate on track to be an effective worker for the monarchical institution and nation. Members of the aristocracy have often reported the many antics, when the Queen herself isn’t reading about them in the media’s newspapers or seeing the television headlines. Camilla and Charles are weary of the hostile headlines against them and Prince Harry himself is sick of Kate’s public flirtatiousness. The courtiers never liked her and the Windsors are fast becoming hostile, where there was once diffident tolerance.

The abdication of her responsibilities as a consort in running her household has caused William to have as lonely a life as a married man as when he was a child, often left in the care of nannies and other staff. Instead of staying around at home, he often goes on hunting trips with friends, or occasional to Kenya to spend time with friend and confidant Jecca Craig.

Prince Harry referred to Kate as being the sister he always wanted, but was forced to start keeping his distance after the Duchess misinterpreted his polite friendliness as being either having a romantic fondness or being deferential to her preferences in his personal life. Harry has distanced himself from the ducal couple, which has caused a pained tension since the brothers were working hard on becoming a royal double act and it was regrettably disrupted by the 2010 engagement announcement and Kate’s move into the royal fold. Initially it was thought that Kate would be able to be added as a newly created triple act, but it has only become a sideshow act that has caused the three royals to become a subject of the most inappropriate rumors and jokes. The most obvious sign of the Duchess’s overfamiliar behavior and inappropriate view of sisterly affection was in 2012 when Duchess Kate sparked rumors of no less than Kate’s brazen flirtation with him during the shows and sparked lewd jokes and subtle suggestions in the news that there was an incestuous love triangle among Kate, William, and Harry. The result is now a rift between the princes and while Harry loves his brother, Harry has been trying to move beyond the role of being the “Dirty Harry” of the royal family; Kate’s flirting and image as a conservative homemaker and elegant cosmopolitan royal duchess has caused Harry to be cast back into the black sheep role that he was only just about to climb out of. During more ensuring public engagements, Kate was showing an obvious preference for Prince Harry, something that William couldn’t put a public stop to, lest he cause a scene during a public engagement, but her overtures have made people question if whether or not the Duchess is aware that she’s a married woman.

Kate was determined to make herself into a sister figure and yet, unused to the more formally established boundaries of the more individualistic private lives of the Windsors. There is no secret that Kate is used to a family where boundaries are less substantial, but Kate’s attempts were seen as disconcertingly aggressive. Reports of Kate seeing Harry in a tryst in the library with now ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy painted the prince as the same party boy as he used to be and made Kate out to be an unsophisticated commoner unused to the dissolute ways of the Windsors. Such a premise ignored the numerous exotic holidays that Kate had gone on with William and of course, the numerous clubs and parties that Kate was an evening fixture in. There was little to no chance of the public forgetting it easily and certainly, in small ways the royals reminded Kate of her constant clubbing and fact that Kate herself had cohabited with William during university.

Harry later moved into a small room in a cottage sized apartment in Kensington Palace, but there was a row over how Kate was again invading his private space when she was heard to have been planning on decorating his room while he was away. Now that living arrangements have again changed (with the move of William and Kate into their twenty room renovated suite in Kensington) the relations have gotten distant yet again as Harry resumes a more active royal life and a widened scope of duties independent of the three person act that the royal family has tried to create to launch the three as a new generation of hot young royals, the trailblazers of modern monarchy. Yet, Kate’s public behavior, the possessiveness for Harry’s attention in such a public way makes courtiers worry that Harry might well have problems attracting an appropriate wife that he would be happy with.

Instead of taking control of her life as a married duchess and chatelaine of the residences that she shares with William, Duchess Kate has instead regressed to her former behaviors as a young adult still dependent on her mother’s commanding personality. At first it was understood that Kate’s close relationship with her mother would in fact be an asset as Kate adjusted to living with William as husband and wife and it was tacitly understood that Kate would continue her close relationship with her family; but it was never believed that Kate would go so far as to have Carole literally take over to run the household and that William and Kate would regress to their pre-marriage relationship dynamics with Carole to direct her life and domestic arrangements.

The situation has in particular affected the marriage between the ducal couple, causing problems as William tries to leave his bachelor relationship closeness with Carole in the past and start a life with Kate as a married couple independent of their families.

Prince Harry’s sudden openness and blatant declaration of his reasoning for his interest in marriage has startled the world of royal watchers due to the incredible bluntness and unnerving utilitarian reasoning behind his sudden interest in matrimony. The prince has been known to be a happy single young prince, whose happy go lucky personality has gotten him into serious trouble with the public (and in some cases the royal family) and since his recent tours of duty in the Middle East, has started to settle into a far more formal and less rebellious member of the royal family. Prince Harry’s tour of Jamaica on behalf of Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee and his 2013 tour of Australia has shown the prince to be entirely scandal free and his very stiff necked behavior has shown the prince to be far more conservative than his more laid back elder brother.

The reasons for the interest of the prince to get married and settle down with a family are far more pragmatic than just for the reason of having a family of his own to come home to. Instead of having a gracious cosmopolitan consort to squire to world events and appearances on behalf of the Crown, or the endless society events that the Duchess of Cambridge revels in, but in fact for the sake of his military career. Harry believes that a wife will enhance and promote his military career and enable him to be able to gain promotion. A military wife is one filled with instability and uncertainty, but there are additional duties that the prince would require of his wife. While Harry will not likely engage in any more active combat, the wife of a ranking officer includes many duties to support troubled and anxious wives, live in base, and build a real social life for the other wives of officers. It was once believed that the Duchess Catherine herself would end up doing such activities, but her return to a cosmopolitan social life in London put paid to such plans and it’s believed that it hindered William’s credibility as a dedicated officer in the SAR branch of the military and undermined his sincere desire to advance via merit and not just rank as a royal prince.

Officers who are married are often given more leeway and are given special benefits and consideration. Family men in the military are seen as more grounded, more disciplined, and less likely to engage in irresponsible behavior off base that would put the officer’s focus on work at risk. Harry as of late has been working hard at setting his personal life on more stable footing. The hard partying prince has been notorious for his off-base antics and as a result, has hurt his credibility as a soldier and prince who is genuinely interested in the less fortunate. He conceptualized and worked hard at organizing and successfully seeing the Invictus Games make their debut to a public that showed such enthusiasm that a discussion about launching the Games in other countries commenced almost immediately after. The prince since his breakup with socialite Cressida Bonas has left him single, but still enjoying the club culture and the company of dozens of potential lovers, but he’s been known to refrain from an interest in taking any of them back to his palace bedroom with him for a night between the royal sheets. This new slow evolution of the prince shows that Harry is now determinedly moving towards a new domestic life and prefers to make a marriage based on more than just the more romantic ideals held by his elder brother Prince William.

Prince Harry’s more utilitarian reasons for marriage are more reminiscent of the Empire era of when royals were businesslike in their decisions regarding marriage and preferred to base who they would marry based on how to best advance the family’s interests and reach. While Harry is not likely going to marry a woman who brings him an empire or trade treaties, but he has shown a distinct difference in how he treats women from his rarified background to those he has been notorious to have flings with. Harry’s first and very serious long term relationship was with the buxom and almost brazen blonde Chelsy Davy, the daughter of Charles Davy and a former beauty queen Beverley. Chelsy attended British boarding schools from an early age, starting with girl’s school Cheltenham and from then on was effortlessly welcomed into the socially prominent set. Her past has hurt her in the eyes of the press and public, her bon vivant approach to her private life. Her father’s collaboration with vicious Zimbabwean dictator Mugabe has unsettled many, yet its bene understood that Mr. Davy has only collaborated if only to be able to retain his properties and avoid the direct and openly promoted persecution of land holding whites. Blatant confiscation of vast farming estates has resulted in a vicious backlash and the fact that Charles Davy has been known to be able to retain control of his property and business holdings makes it easily believed that Mr. Davy might be part of Mugabe’s inner circle by choice or necessity.

Family ties aside, the heiress’ free spirited approach to life and assertiveness was seen as Chelsy being more than up to the challenge of handling the volatile prince. Harry and Chelsy were known to have frequent screaming rows and relentless confrontations and the frequent splits made for excellent tabloid headlines. Chelsy and Harry allegedly had a series of trysts inside public bathroom stalls on tropical beaches and because of her wealth and connections, the blonde heiress never felt threatened about losing Prince Harry, worrying that if she lost the prince, she would lose everything. She had (and still has) her own position in the international social scene and because of her family wealth, never felt pressure to keep him happy at all times to ensure that she would marry well. Since they met in 2004 (while Chelsy was attending Stowe School) they were considered almost a sure bet for marriage. Unlike the more conventionally conformist Kate, Chelsy spent much of her time overseas and independent, leaving Harry to pursue his military career and friendships with his London social set unhindered by expectations of an early marriage. Chelsy gained a Bachelor’s degree in Economics at the prestigious University of Cape Town and in 2009 earned a law degree from Leeds University. With multiple degrees the heiress showed the world that she was not going to wait her twenties out in expectation that Harry would make her his wife and consort. Being fun-loving, she willingly deferred the beginning of her legal career for two years and indulged in good times with Harry. Yet, in 2011 the relationship faltered and the couple broke it off for good and reportedly Harry and Chelsy remain friendly acquaintances.

For a brief time it looked like that Harry had begun a quiet affair and blossoming relationship with Pippa Middleton, the sister of Kate Middleton, (who on her wedding became Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge) and it was believed that Pippa and Harry were communicating via text messaging. During the aftermath of the wedding ceremony and balcony appearance, Pippa and Harry were seeming to openly flirt with each other, but despite the fact that Harry and Pippa walked out of Westminster Abbey arm in arm and in that there was open speculation that Pippa might marry Harry and pull off a spectacular double match (“Double Duchess” being the slang term being thrown around in the possible anticipation of Pippa marrying Prince Harry), Prince Harry himself openly rejected any idea with the open declaration that he was “one hundred percent single” and thus deciding to publicly scupper any possibility of Pippa being involved romantically with him, much less a serious contender for his hand in marriage. Such a public rejection reportedly embarrassed the energetic socialite, who reportedly had such a possible chance in mind when she wouldn’t invite her long term boyfriend Alex Loudon to the wedding as a guest of hers and an escort to her sister’s wedding reception. The public speculation and very possibility of a chance at a serious relationship with Prince Harry damaged her existing relationship with Alexander Loudon permanently and Harry’s blunt public denial caused considerable humiliation for Pippa.

Such a blunt and heavy handed move was a significant sign that the prince would not tolerate any public pressure to become seriously involved in any relationship. He was amiable about it, but the bluntness of it reportedly startled the perennial matchmaker Carole (the mother of Duchess Catherine and Pippa) out of her complacency and drew a line that Pippa realized she would not be able to cross. It’s known that the Middletons were active in promoting their older daughter Kate as a perfect wife and consort for William, with various columnists writing frequent, glowing articles about how (as each year passed) close and certain it was that William would make Kate his wife. Behind Harry’s more carefree approach it was seen that Harry would be in charge of his own personal life, single or in a relationship and he would not be manipulated or pressured into making anyone a girlfriend, much less a wife. Insiders reported that Harry became incensed at Duchess Kate’s interference; supposedly the Duchess was in fact making lists, viewing backgrounds of eligible single ladies, putting herself in a position of authority over Harry’s love life, which caused a serious fracture in the closeness between Harry and William. It’s no secret that nothing would make the Duchess of Cambridge happier than to see Harry dating and eventually marrying her sister Pippa, but Harry has made it clear that his personal life remains his, not under his sister-in-law’s imaginary jurisdiction. Harry admires and has a sincere affection for Catherine, but his boundaries are firmly established in his private life. Kate’s dislike of Chelsy was another minor bone of contention between the younger brother of William and William’s new wife.

Since the breakup between Harry and Chelsy, Harry drifted romantically, having fleeting affairs with a series of television personalities and an apparent short term affair with Florence Brudenell-Smith, an affluent connected peripheral member of his social set. Florence is an upper class lingerie model with several modeling contracts on her resume; her good connections and publicity from her relationship with Harry assured her additional work. It was fleeting and the successful model continues with her career to this day. Harry had several flings with females who frequent the London club scene and these anonymous ladies were not considered long term prospects by the prince, who continued to view several women with dismissiveness that made palace courtiers unnerved that Harry might be set in dissolute ways. While William was settled and married, with an heir of his own on the way, Harry continued to leave a string of romantic conquests and made it clear that his playboy ways were firmly established and he would not be settling down into a serious relationship, much less marriage, any time soon. With his brother married and having a child, Harry’s stature in the succession was moved to the bachelor prince becoming only fourth in line, not third as he used to be. With a second child coming, Prince Harry will be removed to fifth in line, a place held previously by Princess Eugenie (who is now going to become the seventh in line once the second child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge is born) and is now under no substantial pressure to marry.

After drifting around Harry settled into a confirmed and publicly shown relationship with upper class 22 year old Cressida Bonas, introduced (allegedly) by Princess Eugenie of York and nurtured by Princess Beatrice. She was not immediately noticeable due to her bohemian casual ways and habit of dressing in an almost shabby manner and her lack of congenial responsiveness made photographers uncertain over whether or not she was indeed a serious part of Harry’s life or if she would be just one of many attractive upper class girls engaged in a brief affair. The pretty blonde 22 year old fit the profile often noticed by royal watchers in regards to who the prince prefers to treat seriously as an official, serious girlfriend and romantic intimate. For an aristocrat, Cressida fits the profile. Despite a lack of title, the blonde is a part of Harry’s upper crust circle in her own right and even for a member of his set, is very intimately connected to the royal family via the affectionate friendship that the York princesses have with Cressida. Cressida’s mother, Lady Mary-Gaye Curzon was a major force in the upper class London social scene during the sixties, a darling of high society who wasn’t known for just her considerable beauty and charm, but her string of numerous lovers and a love life that generated into chaos. After working at a variety of fashionably unneeded jobs her love life took priority, a love life that resulted in five children from three out of four husbands, her unorthodox and scandalous lifestyle climaxed when she posed for a coffee table book that showed her smeared in grease and topless. Her father by comparison comes from a respectably humble background of butchers and his entrepreneurial business activities have resulted in him leading a far more focused life, but the fast lane loving Lady Mary-Gaye proved incompatible and there was a divorce while Cressida was still a child.

After several months of discreet meetings and showing up separately at the events surrounding close friends, yet meeting quietly after and enjoying quiet walks and other romantic pursuits. It’s debatable that the relationship ever became physical, but the relationship started in 2012, peaked in 2013 with marriage rumors not being denied at all by the palace and a trip to Balmoral to see the Queen herself slated, to suddenly coming apart in 2014 with an announcement from friends of the couple via leaks to the press. The couple went to concerts and other events with the York princesses (who were working merrily at moving the romance along), but it oddly unraveled and has since remained over. Unlike Chelsy Davy, the pretty (now 24 years old) blonde remains a firm favorite friend of the York princesses and might be secretly pining for a second chance. Cressida is confirmed to be starring in a major motion picture with legendary actress Dame Judi Dench and there are rumors that Cressida might become a highly successful actress because of all the exposure and the prestige of having Dench as a co-star. It is likely that if Harry were to suddenly ask for another chance with Cressida, it is likely he would be required to actually propose like Prince William did secretly to Kate in 2007 after Kate and William came together again as a couple. It would possibly be the only way for Harry to convince Cressida to give him another chance since like most young women who have dated princes, her budding career might have to take second place in favor of being at Harry’s side when Harry is available. Realistically though, Cressida might never come back after the palace engaged in a subtle smear campaign, alleging that Cressida’s neediness is what made the prince cool towards her, resulting in the breakup. The palace is known to use such techniques to protect members of the royal family from public criticism.

At this point in time, Harry is single and fancy free, but his astounding announcement that he is ready to begin finding a not just a new woman to be a significant part of his life, but in fact a bride has startled gossip columnists and the media, who has been kept largely out of the loop by Harry in the past. Prince Harry used to be fairly vague about when he would be ready to be serious about finding someone to be a wife, consort, and mother to his children who would also be his heirs. During interviews he has stated his inability to find someone who would sincerely love him for himself, to share the loneliness of royal life and duty, but such phrases and sentiments are considered by professional royal watchers to be almost cliché, but what has given watchers pause is his openness about finding someone that would be ‘useful’ to his career in the military to promote his interests among the other ambitious officers vying for promotion. Harry is a royal prince, second son of the Prince of Wales, grandson of the Queen, and brother to the future King of England, which would ensure that with a stroke of a pen he could get any rank he wishes (William is becoming openly accused of using his position to gain entrée into the RAF and be assigned whatever position he requests) and no one would be able to openly object or criticize, but Harry wishes to ensure that he is immune from such accusations and insiders are shocked that he would be so blatant over his conservative views of what he would view as wife material. It’s a far cry from his elder brother William, Duke of Cambridge, who married a commoner with no aristocratic background, no social connections in her own right, and no contacts among the courtiers. Kate’s social move up the ladder to future Queen Consort is considered unprecedented. Kate’s background has no titles and her mother Carole only moved up through her marriage to Michael Middleton (a man with a long line of solicitors in his background) from a background of growing up in Southall public housing environments with coal miners as ancestors. Harry, despite his fun loving nature, is showing himself to be far more conservative in his preferences of who his ideal wife’s background should be.

Officers who have wives that are capable of nurturing their husbands, putting together good social events and performing as successful hostesses are considered an incomparable asset to any ambitious officer and it is becoming obvious that he wishes for a wife to be able to burnish the less than elegant edges to his personality and entertain his senior officers. Certainly he, like his brother wishes for a stable family life, but the openness about his more pragmatic preferences has broken the traditional public relations rules of royal houses who wish to (at least publicly) eschew the old fashioned ideas of wishing to be involved in a relationship for any reason other than falling in love. The view of the role of a wife and consort that Harry is showing himself to hold is an opinion shared among the older members of royal families, but such pragmatism is kept behind closed doors. This open declaration that he would like a wife to promote his military career to a new level has actually caused several derisive reactions and many commentators openly point out that the prince himself is not such a great catch that any woman that Harry would in fact need is not likely to throw her life away for the life of helping Harry advance in rank and responsibilities. It’s created a small backlash against the popular prince, who many point out has several unpleasant personality traits that make him unfit to have such high expectations. The prince has been caught experimenting with drugs and still socializes with a fast crowd that has a bad habit of getting headline after headline in the newspapers for all the worst possible reasons.

What works against Prince Harry is that his increasingly unpopular sister-in-law Duchess Catherine is known for ignoring even the pretense of being interested in serious charity work and making appearances at state evening receptions. As Catherine becomes a fixture on the red carpet scene and mingles more with celebrities, it might become the responsibility of Harry’s wife and consort to take on the substantial burden of serious behind the scenes charity work while the Duchess of Cambridge indulges in her luxury loving lifestyle and aspires for a more cosmopolitan oriented role that is at odds with the importance of every member of the royal family to maintain links with the citizenry through their charity work and assist the needy in getting help the general public cannot provide. Courtiers have all but given up on trying to get the Duchess of Cambridge to take responsibility for the success of her charities and ensure diplomatic goodwill in favor of the UK and Commonwealth by attending diplomatic events such as banquets and receptions, but she’s (Catherine) is increasingly indifferent and ignoring hostile public opinion. What insiders are worried about that if Harry does find someone, that the wife of Harry will have to shoulder not just the responsibilities of a military wife (fraught with more than enough stress and tension in that role alone), but the duties that are neglected by the Duchess of Cambridge would have to be fulfilled and there’s a very real chance that Harry’s wife might be pressed into fulfilling those duties in addition to her own. With the possible surge in popularity, the wife of Harry would probably have to deal with substantial numbers of invitations sent by interested people who wish to meet and interview the new consort, along with the required lessons in deportment that would need to be learned in private. The additional demands placed to fulfill the worthy aims of Catherine’s neglected charities would cause stress and possibly even strain the marriage.

Dealing with Duchess Catherine would prove to be a formidable difficulty. The Duchess has shown her domineering traits when in 2011 she was rumored to be searching lists for a potential wife for Harry, but it was known that Kate would prefer to see her sister on Harry’s arm as first a girlfriend, but then as a bride. Pippa made a widely popular debut on the world stage as bridesmaid and as Kate left as a bride of William, Pippa left Westminster on Harry’s arm and many watchers (guests as well) noticed that as Carole left at the side of Prince Charles, Carole was eyeing Harry speculatively and it became a clear reality that Carole would like to see Pippa dating and then marrying Harry, thus pulling off a sisterly ‘Double Duchess’ coup that would place both sisters close to the throne. Kate tried to strategically place her sister in the royal circle by attempting to get Pippa hired into the royal household as a lady-in-waiting, but it was mooted and the newly minted Duchess was left unable to help her sister forge any romantic link with the newly single Harry. By the end of 2011 William and Kate were gently ordered to move into Kensington Palace, mainly because the Duchess was unwilling to respect the formal family boundaries that royals live by to ensure that there are no disruptions in the routines of the royals. As time passed, the ducal couple would do appearances with Prince Harry and Kate would cause quiet jokes through her overtly, almost exaggerated, affectionate behavior towards Harry. It reached a peak in 2012 when during the Olympics Kate’s inexplicable behavior caused vilely salacious gossip that the Duchess was in the middle of a royal love triangle. William reportedly lost his temper with his wife, but Kate hasn’t refrained from making it clear that she would be involved in Harry’s personal life whether or not it pleased William. The very real nature of Kate’s unhealthy fixation on Harry means that any woman who dates, much less marries Harry might have to deal with occasional interference from Kate. As future Queen Consort, Kate holds a senior position in the royal family and will in fact be able to have a final say over who Harry’s wife is able to hire and will likely have strong opinions and will enjoy precedence in the Court.

Any woman who marries into the struggling Windsor dynasty would have to deal with not just the scrutiny that is de rigueur for any young woman who accompanies a prince (as wife or girlfriend), but with the changing family dynamics and delicate family situation that surrounds the reality that the Queen is indeed aging, passing more duties to Prince William, and there is a renewed possibility that the former wife of Prince Andrew of York might in fact be welcomed back into the royal fold. Just recently the ex-wife of Prince Andrew, Sarah Ferguson, known widely as “Fergie,” was invited to spend time at the main house of the castle Balmoral, a striking show of acceptance after almost thirty years of rejection since the 1992 divorce. Fergie has made no secret of her determination to remain attached to Prince Andrew and through her close (almost domineering) relationship with her daughters and various high profile business ventures, she has retained a presence in the life of her ex-husband. Despite the new show of royal favor, there is no belief that the Queen would allow Fergie back into the royal fold unless Prince Philip were to predecease her. Prince Philip remains antagonistic and hostile to Fergie, a sentiment shared among the courtiers who secretly prefer to keep Fergie out of the royal family and prefer to see Fergie removed from Royal Lodge. The scandal prone ex-royal duchess has long been an annoying sideshow to the courtiers, who resent that the royal family is essentially still taking care of Fergie, despite the fact that she is not entitled to remain living on royal properties because legally she is not a member of the royal family.

Yet, despite it, Fergie, Princess Beatrice, and Princess Eugenie retain close ties and have made it clear that they are determined to have their mother in their life. The Princesses are also responsible for the courtship between Prince Harry and Cressida Bonas and the two princesses make for a formidable duo in the royal circle. For someone to marry Harry, Harry’s new wife would have to deal with the uncomfortable reality that the York princesses would have preferred someone else, specifically, Cressida as a bride for Harry. While there might not be overt hostility or deliberately created difficulties, the knowledge that there is resentment could cause discomfort and tension. A younger and even far more glamorous wife of Harry could in fact cause public opinion to shift all the more against the idea of a future where the York princesses play an officially recognized (and paid) role as representatives of the Crown. William and Catherine have fallen woefully short of expectations and as a result, palace insiders are pondering the idea of allowing Beatrice to be a part time working royal, dividing her time between a practical career and a schedule of a working representative of the Crown. One way for the York princesses to ensure their own income from the Crown would be to have a woman of their choosing on Harry’s arm as his wife, a woman who would also work to ensure their own security for the future. A glamorous and hardworking consort married to Harry would in fact make the princesses more of a liability than an asset and chances would be that Prince Charles would in fact follow through on his plans to cut the Duke of York and his family off of the support system (mainly financial) of the royal family.

Aside from personal family issues, Harry is stuck in between two polar opposites where his choice of bride might come from. At his age, normal middle class young women are unavailable simply through the reality that at by the time they reach thirty, women who are required by circumstances to make their own way in the world are firmly established and would not be willing to jeopardize their careers for the miniscule possibility that Prince Harry would seriously consider marrying them. While Duchess Kate was hyped as a normal middle class girl, the reality is that Kate’s parents were affluent enough to send their eldest daughter to an expensive and prestigious university (St. Andrews), provide her with an ample allowance, and avoid the burden of having to pay off any student loans. During her summers and gap year (after graduation) Kate enjoyed going on expensive vacations with Prince William. If not for her family wealth and other resources, it’s quietly agreed among the public and media that Kate might have had to earn her living and not be available for Prince William’s demands that she be ready to go on trips or make appearances with him. William’s schedule was set in stone, but on occasion he would call her up and to many she was essentially William’s employee, a beck and call girl who he would expect to be available to him at any and all times. Harry could pursue the route of courting and dating an untitled but well off young woman, but the realistic idea of success is debatable since the Duchess of Cambridge, who comes from the same kind of background has had problems accepting the all-encompassing responsibilities that consorts are supposed to take on behind closed doors. Despite being William’s girlfriend for a full decade, Kate has (in the almost unanimous view of palace insiders and public opinion) showed herself to be irresponsible and often well in over her head socially when she does participate in rare appearances at official receptions. Many palace officials believed that after a decade of knowing the royal ways through her long term relationship with William and the fact that Kate as a child grew up learning fully about the monarchy as a part of her life as a British subject, Kate would be more than ready and prepped to take on charities and do flawless public appearances. There is a very real fear that if Harry marries someone unused to royal life that the courtiers and aides will have to spend numerous hours and days teaching a new incoming royal wife the basics and worrying that the new wife will still make gaffes and look foolish, while suffering adjustment problems that can trigger other disorders (like bulimia or anorexia).

An upper class lady, well connected, titled, and well trained in etiquette would make for an effortless transition to royal life, yet ironically, the memory of Diana still haunts modern history in who princes would prefer to take for a royal wife, which is why Harry might have twice as much a harder time finding a wife from among the upper echelons. A titled aristocrat would understand and hopefully be able to blend in to this dynamic, but modern preferences have permeated even the titled set and even back to the days of Prince Charles, when the British royal family’s standing was at its zenith, titled ladies disliked the idea of marrying into the royal family and dealing with disproportionate pressures that would accompany the position. Harry’s image is that of a far more egalitarian, carefree young man than his brother (who has been losing his down to earth image as a People’s Prince) and with his louche partying ways, makes him more a target for club hopping groupies than a well-bred young lady from a ‘good’ (aka titled) family. Young ladies of the aristocracy are frequently snapped indulging in all the clubs, but they have their limits and often marry fairly young or develop interests that evolve into business and then these entrepreneurial ladies would balk at giving it all up just to marry into the House of Windsor.

Instead of viewing marriage and a ‘great match’ as living well without being on the hands of their brothers and family for material support, upper class young women prefer to now build their own businesses and set up their own charitable organizations. Aware of how their mothers and grandmothers were often stuck in loveless marriages, married in order to survive materially as well as socially, the young women of these days prefer to go to school, get a good degree, and then end up living independently for a substantial number of years, either settling down in their thirties or preferring to end up not marrying at all. The royal family is notoriously close-knit to the point of being similar to a cult, with everyone, even those who marry in, treated as outsiders and held at a polite arm’s length, something agreed upon by numerous, diverse, biographers. Courtiers who work hard to promote and protect the royal family are treated as ‘the enemy’ and it has made courtiers increasingly resentful that the royals use them to protect themselves (the royals) from the consequences of their errors, but treat the courtiers (the majority of who are aristocrats by birth) as enemies not to be trusted. The recent light tarring of Cressida Bonas, Prince Harry’s ex-girlfriend as ‘needy’ only confirmed many reservations that many upper class parents would have at their own daughter marrying into the royal house. Harry, despite his good looks and amiable charm, is still very boyish in many emotional aspects of his character and his foibles are at age thirty wearing thin. Before the wedding of William to Kate, Harry was caught among a set of aristocrats going to a nightclub called “The Box,” a place where deviant sexual acts are performed on stage, also including in the sexual freak show a clown using a blowtorch and it’s believed that intercourse for hire is available, with waitresses half naked and there is the consensus that the prince has a taste for more than just taking women home to the palace. Insiders among the royal set have come to an opinion that the real, very real, problem may be with Harry himself.

During his relationship with Cressida Bonas, the prince was enjoying a spell of substantial goodwill and increased prestige in the public eye, but he threw it all away on a much publicized 2013 May scandal when he was reported on as enjoying a full blown borderline bacchanalian orgy with a dozen women in a Las Vegas hotel. It blew his good image to pieces and the unpublished photographs reportedly showed full frontal photographs of the prince naked. All of Harry’s work for his charities and his brief service of combat in Afghanistan were overshadowed by the scandal, also putting his relationship with Cressida Bonas to the test. While Cressida laughed off the prince’s antics as a young man sowing wild oats, the courtiers were yet again exasperated that Harry had put himself in a situation where he would be vulnerable to being blackmailed by a party goer (via a threat to sell the photographs of him naked) and worse, putting himself in a high risk situation for attack. Terrorists have been known to use women as agents (Chechen ‘black widows’ being one example) and the prince’s recklessness in allowing complete strangers into his hotel room by the dozens, without being vetted by security officers caused even more frustration at his perverse determination to set himself up for very real harm. Protection officers guarding the royals are among the best in the world, but even the best security protection needs the cooperation of the client. The prince’s refusal to adhere to the guidelines and protocols only leaves the protection officer with additional duties, when the main and only duty is for the officer to protect the royal they are assigned to guard. The courtiers were allegedly testy at how everyone in the prince’s entourage was held responsible, all but the prince himself who was known to have been the main instigator of the festivities. Without Harry’s permission, there is no way that Harry’s staff and friends who go with the prince on these trips would have invited any one of these women to his hotel suite. Prince Harry’s past shows that he has the ability to pull his life together, only to ruin it completely with a self-destructive act that causes all the work that the courtiers do to rehabilitate his image to fall to pieces.

Harry’s cold and open declaration that he will prefer to marry someone who will help him advance in the military is a sign that the prince has a coldly pragmatic approach, an approach that will put off just the sort of woman that he would need. As a prince the courtiers serve him with the sincere belief that he is put where he is by God, but there is still a consensus that Harry as a person isn’t going to be someone that a smart and sensible young woman with a sincere work ethic will not want to put up with a husband who is both reckless and unstable with a streak for self-sabotage. His elitism is at odds with the actuality of what little he would in fact bring to any relationship and he’s currently in a catch-22 position, his struggle will continue in finding his ideal match.

“I’m willing to learn quickly and work hard”

With her mother as a role model for working women and the chance to bond with Sophie, Prince Edward’s wife, there was a justifiable expectation that with such examples Kate would flower into an efficient working Duchess and help the royal family connect on a closer level with ordinary people. During the time of the engagement, Kate participated in a series of appearances with William, visiting her old university St. Andrews, enjoying the christening of a newly designed lifeboat, and pancake tossing. The wife to be was making a show of being more than ready for royal life of frequent trips and mingling enthusiastically with the crowds and all signs pointed toward a hardworking future.

Right after her marriage nothing was expected, other than a return to Anglesey where Kate and William had long established their own intimate life, but due to a sudden change in preference, the newly married ducal couple set off on a tour of Canada and then in the role of President of BAFTA, to Los Angeles, California to meet the film community of Hollywood entertainers.

Kate had been moved into a set of routine appearances with the royal family after her honeymoon, mainly the usual yearly appearances done by the royal family (Ascot/Trooping the Color), but the desire for an overseas tour was in fact a pleasant surprise; the courtiers saw this as a welcome sign that the newly minted duchess was ready to begin regular appearances and end up contributing normally as a working member of the Royal Family, nicknamed “The Firm.”

After the whirlwind tour, which went off well, the couple returned, but not to work. William went back to his RAF work and Wales, while Kate ended up taking frequent trips to London. It was unanticipated that Kate would suddenly pick up stakes and move to London, after turning down the chance to be part of the officer’s club that the wives of William’s fellow officers formed as a means of showing support to one another as their husbands put their lives at risk for the sake of the country. Kate was immediately offered membership, but the duchess snubbed the offer and almost right away returned to London, even missing William’s birthday. With William in Wales and occupied with his military work, it was assumed the Duchess would spend her time either in Wales keeping house, or she would spend her time with the Court working on developing her own agenda and use the vast support system of the palace to carry it out successfully. That she was doing neither came as a disconcerting surprise.

Kate’s carefree presence in London did surprise many members of the royal court, since it was expected that Kate would be working as a housewife and spending time with the other military wives (to support each other while husbands were overseas), yet many watchers were stunned that Kate returned to live mainly in London spent almost no time with her husband. In royal and aristocratic circles a wife’s place is by the side of her husband and it was a large surprise that Kate, who had often been glued at the hip with William, was suddenly leaving him home alone and deciding to live it up in London and essentially snubbing the other military wives. Leaving William alone to cook a frozen dinner on his birthday was considered neglecting the running of the house in Wales and she was slacking off from her duties as a consort. Friends of William knew all too well the problems William’s unstable upbringing had on him, causing a subsequent craving for a healthy home life and as a new wife Kate was considered the ideal candidate to provide it.

Seeing the Duchess shopping and entertaining herself around London made her promises look suddenly false and there were whispers that Kate had indeed presented William (and by proxy the Queen and public) with false intentions. As someone who had been a fixture in the London social scene for a decade, the courtiers had assumed she would be done with the frivolity that surrounded her single life, but instead she seemed to return to it, with a vengeance. Her nights were not spent at the clubs, but there had been a sense that cynics were right, Kate was in fact shirking her responsibilities as a royal duchess. While shopping, lunching, visiting her family on weekends, and enjoying the cosmopolitan delights of the capital, she surprised the courtiers by shunning the office at St. James Palace and refusing to attend meetings to listen and discuss the issues surrounding the development of a twenty-first century monarchy.

Despite the grounds of Kensington Palace having a charity, Kate was never known to have visited and even ejected the charity from the very apartments she wanted for her own home (the former residence of Princess Margaret, sister of the Queen) and the public relations officers had cited asbestos as being the reason, despite the fact that such problems had never before been detected. Despite her proximity, she never visited Buckingham Palace and failed to end up meeting with the courtiers who knew of her presence in London, but didn’t presume to summon her to talk about her future plans (such a summons is the prerogative of the Sovereign) and it was well known that the new royal would be allowed to find her own footing and comfort zone of royal patronages. Despite the fact that she was insecure in palace circles, Duchess Kate didn’t immediately move to solidify her standing with the public, deciding to instead begin the routine lifestyle of a lady who lunches. Kate spent her mornings at the Kensington Palace cottage and after dressing would summon her security officer and leave the palace grounds to enjoy the city scene, this time as a royal duchess.

Much of the surprise came from Court circles, where Kate was notoriously short of allies. Despite friendly statements to the press about being close, various members of the royal family have been either distant or wrapped up in their own routines to really spend time with the Duchess as family members (in the way the Duchess is used to) or friends to spend time with. Since there were no children to care for, the Queen was known to be fairly shocked that Kate was ignoring her husband, who was supposed to have the first claim on her attention and presence. It’s well known that the Queen had devoted herself to her husband while he was stationed in Malta and even at the expense of caring for Charles who was an infant at the time. For Kate not to be taking advantage of the time she had the ability to spend with William with no pressure to do duties, it first irritated and began to anger the Queen considerably. Charles was no less irritated, since the Duchess was spending his money on her leisurely lifestyle, running up substantial grooming bills with her frequent trips to the salons and to the manicurist. The Queen became irritated when seeing the reports from the protection officers of the Duchess’ frivolous and activates in the city and her newly acquired (or until now dormant) expensive tastes.

Her protection officers kept the press at bay, but the palace waited for the duchess to visit palace offices, but their waiting and expectations were in vain. With William in Wales and occupied with his military work, it was assumed the Duchess would spend her time either in Wales keeping house, or she would spend her time with the Court working on developing her own agenda and use the vast support system of the palace to carry it out successfully. After six months of idleness, punctuated with the appearance with the rest of the royal family for reasons of state, by October it was clear that she had woefully under performed in comparison to her predecessor Diana.

Appearances can be draining and often stressful, but the new bride was known to the world already and the idea of the Duchess having to adjust to the spotlight was, to those among the royal court, absurd. The Duchess had been cooperation itself when it was floated that she attend a tour of Canada and the United States, but she became (and remains) stubborn about doing routine appearances at clinics and numerous scout meetings, coming up with excuses and in some occasions pleading stress and illness. However, she would look contradictory when seen out shopping and enjoying leisurely lunches at posh cafes, snapped by the photographers that were beginning to get pressured by royal lawyers to back off.

To be sure, Diana was Princess of Wales floundered during her early years due to the demands to perform and perform frequently (in addition to the eagerness for people to meet her), but Kate was also expected to move into the same work centered lifestyle and the expectations that Kate would start taking a lion’s share of duties off of the shoulders of senior members of the royal family existed. In the past there was Princess Margaret and various other active royals, but with the deaths of Princess Margaret and the recent streamlining in the number of working royals, the amount of royals available to do duties has decreased while the amount of engagements the public expects the royal family to perform and appear has remained the same. The Duchess has continued to shirk, only going with William to appearances as required, but the rest of Kate’s days are being spent just as when she was unmarried, shopping (often online in private), and lounging around Kensington Palace supervising the refurbishment of her new home.

Since William was a working member of the armed forces, no one expected him to work full time, but the Duchess obviously had plenty of time and money on her hands and she was understandably expected to start unburdening the Queen from her heavy workload and be ready for all public appearances during the upcoming Diamond Jubilee and ready to preside over the 2012 Olympics as a fully integrated working royal. Instead Kate cited her determination to be a housewife and only go to appearances when she was with William and used the false story that she would need William’s permission to end up working or developing her own agenda. This irritated courtiers with the fact that it was an obvious lie and she ended up getting a ticking off for using her husband as a reason for her slacking. It is rumored even that the Queen asked her why she wasn’t working and Kate snapped, “Stop nagging,” which stunned insiders at her act of lese majeste.

The occasional inquiry as to why their workload was so light triggered a reaction and the palace swung into action, pointing out that the couple had barely just been married and setting into a life of living together would take time to get used to. It was accepted, but the courtiers were beginning to get nervous, since anyone who had been a royal watcher knew that Kate had lived with William in Wales for years. The idea of Kate needing to get used to the spotlight was also considered a lame excuse, since the Duchess had been a frequent feature on the covers of tabloids for years. Excuses were given in the form that the Duchess needed time to adjust to royal life, but no one behind the scenes was as naïve as the public (who accepted the excuses with patience). Kate had long been a fixture in William’s life and had attended various official appearances such as Prince Williams’ investiture into the Order of the Garter and his graduation ceremony from Sandhurst long before. There had also been invitations to weddings and the Duchess was his escort on various vacations around the world.

Courtiers frantically scoured the charitable scene, determined to get Kate a respectable amount of patronages, but organizations were leery. Finally at last the courtiers managed to get her a solid amount, but it ended up being a huge amount of work just to get Kate willing to step into her office and do her paperwork and follow through on her promises to make her appearances. She appeared at various functions, met children with cancer and such, but didn’t look like she was putting anything of her inner self into these appearances and there were no follow ups that indicated that meeting the various people were of sincere interest. During one event with the scouts the Duchess brought along her new Cocker Spaniel, but spent much of the time sitting and moping around with the dog on her lap and she wasn’t engaged in any seemingly sincere manner, leading to bad reviews. Her heavily made up appearance detracted from the fun she was supposed to lead the scouts in and she acted like she was tagging along and just killing time.

At the end of 2011, the final tally of appearances that the new royal wife had made was a disappointing thirty-four, far less than that of the errant former Duchess of York, Sarah during her first year of marriage. Despite the usual expectation of charitable activity, only two appearances could be considered part of that since the rest were awards shows, part of overseas trips, and family events, showing a shocking disinterest and lack of motivation expected for a wife of a senior royal. Courtiers worked hard at securing her patronages and it’s undermined Kate’s authority and stature within the royal family. As a wife of a future King, Kate naturally has a clear status and authority, but she has had to deal with the handicap of not having the respect of the system. Within the Court, the lack of illustrious lineage, lack of impressive connections, and the dearth of any real connection with the public, Kate is in fact vulnerable to the endless machinations that swirl around the Court. Kate has zero respect of the palace system and she’s not entirely secure. A solid work background, however recently acquired, would give Kate respect she lacked when she married in.

Kate’s lack of professional background has in fact been unprecedented. All the young modern women who married into the royal family from Diana and Fergie since have had work backgrounds and Princess Margaret’s former husband (Lord Snowdon) was a professional photographer who continued to work as official photographer of the royal family after his marriage. Sophie, Countess of Wessex, ran her own PR firm and as a result, adjusted effortlessly into the routine work of royal life (after a brief and disastrous foray into film production with her husband Prince Edward and her attempt to continue her premarital career) and is viewed as the favorite of the Queen. Even Diana, as a teenager worked as a part time kindergarten assistant and nanny from age sixteen to nineteen (the time of her marriage); the fact that Kate had zero work background in recent times unsettled courtiers who are themselves career oriented in royal service. Kate had a brief stint at Jigsaw fashion, working as an assistant to the buyers of the business, but that was ended, the reason given that Kate could not cope with the press interest and alleged intrusiveness. The palace was silent about her lack of career, but insiders did wonder if whether or not Kate could cope with royal life since appearances are done with the press involved, to promote the charities and organizations the royals are supposed to work for and support via fundraising.

Kate explained herself as having difficulties relating to her coworkers and press harassment, but that was viewed as obvious silliness. “It’s not like dates with William involve him giving out state secrets via pillow talk and Kate was in fact viewed as being disdainful of the rest of the people she worked with. The girls would talk and laugh about their dates and weekend fun, but Kate would cut herself off and at times, even reject the chance to enter and leave work without being seen by entering and leaving through the back door. Instead she would make the usual press run and act like it was a bigger deal than it really was. It was considered a warning sign by the palace courtiers who wondered how Kate would do royal duties if she couldn’t handle the press,” whispers one insider.

After an early disappointment, the royal family was hopeful that the Duchess had simply had six months of adjustment and would settle in and get to regular work.

Minor Announcement:

I have the news that I have also created a Twitter account and here is the address: @Gossippsychotic

The Crown Princess of Norway has had a notoriously work shy work schedule, has been targeted for criticism because of her materialistic ways, scandalous associations, and preferences for luxury travel unrelated to her duties as a princess. Crown Princess Mette-Marit is also suspected of having been embroiled in an affair with a wealthy Norwegian-American businessman who is supposed to be married! Supposedly the alleged lover is a friend of the couple and it has devastated Haakon, yet the prince has not publicly addressed the issues and rumors and there is not a response from the palace. As a result, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway are reportedly fighting each other! There have been relentless rumors that the crown princely couple have been having serious problems and a rift has been developing for a wide variety of reasons.

The Crown Princess has become notorious for her inability to avoid controversy and scandal. She was blasted by the Norwegian media for going to India using her diplomatic immunity to assist a homosexual couple in watching over the birth of a set of twins via a surrogate. Surrogacy is banned in Norway and has been one of the hottest topics in ethics among medical specialists and religious leaders. To be associated with surrogacy has become controversial in and of itself, but the use of impoverished Indian women has been openly declared exploitative and degrading to desperate people who are desperate for the chance to make any kind of living.

The princess’ luxury lifestyle has been a cause for serious reprimanding as well in the eyes of the courtiers and general population. The Crown Princess developed a preference for expensive haute couture while her closet has been stocked heavily with nothing but designer labels. It has been triggering criticism and her love of luxury has scandalized the down to earth Scandinavian country and low-key royal family and generated substantial bad press. The princess shows a preference for questionable designer combinations and has been known to purchase large amounts of designer dress, but has failed to wear them anywhere, most of her purchases languishing in her closet. The open preference for designs such as Prada, Valentino, Oscar de la Renta (an exceptionally expensive line of gowns), and Chanel has caused disgust in the eyes of traditionalists who view the princess’ extravagance as pointless and irresponsible.

The court of Norway is small, has always been low budget and since the crown princess does not do many duties, there is an increasingly disgusted populace and court who views the princess as behaving like a jet set trophy wife. “The princess has done nothing but behave like a lottery winner and she’s not changed one of her habits, one being that she lacks a sense of direction and has made no progress. The crown prince believes she can do no wrong, but she hasn’t been doing much right,” whispers one miffed staff member. She has been suspected of accepting freebies and not publicly declaring them, one big no-no and she hasn’t been dressing in a more practical manner as well. Her preference for tiny pointed shoes at the toe and stiletto high heels has come across as distracting and she isn’t showing much sense in what she prefers to wear.

In regards to supporting her husband, Mette-Marit is viewed as falling hopelessly short. The princess was absent at a summit meeting between the future monarchs of Europe and the crown prince was forced to make excuses and attend on his own. Her spending has not strained his bank account, but is has caused a lot of tension. The prince possesses an earthy nature and has been unpretentious in his lifestyle outside of his work and enjoys time with his children and family when he isn’t working, but the princess has been spending plenty and not just on clothes. The princess enjoys frequenting the Riviera and beaches of Norway in the summer time and just last year took legal action against a staff of photographers who had snapped her enjoying the summer sunshine with her husband and children. It was called an invasion of privacy, but it caused tension since the princess had been neglecting official duties citing illness, but seemed perfectly healthy as she skipped along the sunny beach. People suspect that the princess was afraid of being seen enjoying yet another holiday instead of enjoying time with her people.

The public did need a lot of reassurance that Mette-Marit would make a good consort for Haakon, since the announcement of his relationship and when marital intentions became clear there was a backlash that had to be subdued and after it was clear that the crown prince would step down and live a private life if denied his chance to marry the single mother and former drug addict, the public and government consented. While the King and Queen acquiesced, it’s believed that they are only tolerant of her at best and were upset that their son had decided upon Mette-Marit. At the time she met Haakon, she was working as a waitress and had long since dropped out of high school. She had had a son out of wedlock and was known to supplement her welfare with strawberry picking during harvest season and was recovering from past drug addiction. All these were major warning signs and the Queen reportedly pleaded with Haakon to break up and move on. Despite this, the prince persevered and Mette-Marit married her prince in a lovely ceremony.

After a while the prince and princess settled into a married life and had several children, with Haakon adapting her son (born out of wedlock) as a secondary father figure and since then Marius has enjoyed the benefit of two father figures (his birth father was convicted for drug dealing and he still does see his biological father frequently) while living in the palace with his mother since she became crown princess. After a settling in period and joint tour, the prince settled back into his normal routine and the princess started showing disturbing signs of itchy feet and a wanderlust that had previously been either undiscovered or disguised. As a way of combining a newly discovered love of travel and to fulfill charitable commitments the princess joined a handful of committees/organizations associated with the United Nations and soon she was often away from the court and attending conferences, greeting delegates, and making speeches. People of the court and country were thrilled, but after a while the princess began to add trips to fashion shows, gala dinners unrelated to her charities, and balls filled with members of the entertainment industry, the type of people the royals in the Scandinavian region do not often socialize with outside of the rare event that involves entertainers.

It wasn’t just galas, but also private events like birthday parties celebrating the birthdays of actresses such as Gwyneth Paltrow and various others. Mette-Marit’s eager mingling with the celebrity elite has cheapened the dignity of her title and alienated the court while triggering resentment among the natives of Norway. Unlike the British monarchy the Scandinavian royals have made it a point to involve themselves in more practical schooling and native associations of their country. The princess’ fascination with celebrity has caused her to (in the eyes of the citizenry) ignore the people who would greet her with open arms if she were to dedicate herself to the every day concerns of charity and philanthropy, but her desire to bypass the ordinary duties of a princess send the message that she considers herself, her ambitions, and her desires to be above the ordinary people of Norway. Oddly, despite such ambition, it’s noticed she’s still leading a wandering life undefined by any practical direction that would end up having her be a proper support system for Haakon and enable him to handle the social aspect of royal appearances (though receptions and receiving guests) and something that would promote Norway as more than just one of the low-key Scandinavian nations.

The prince has often been left alone to do his duties by himself, forced to make excuses for the absence of his wife, which has caused awkwardness among the Norwegian courtiers as they see Haakon become more and more of a single father and the royal family has been unsure of how to show support without seeming patronizing or be seen as taking sides against Mette-Marit. Mette-Marit is a modern woman, but the role she has married into requires a substantial amount of old-fashioned restraint and deference to her husband. Haakon isn’t just a man or husband, but a prince as well. To see the future King of Norway being a secondary consideration to his wife has not lowered the respect the people have, but many view it as Mette-Marit showing a lack of respect for the man she is supposed to show respect to as an example to the nation. She’s often dragged her husband along and as a result the prince has been viewed as degrading himself in that he is viewed as tagging along as a chaperone or escort, when it is the princess who is supposed to be following his lead as her wifely duty.

The prince is still in love with his wayward wife and the royal family is afraid of alienating Haakon and jeopardizing their increasingly complicated relationship with him. It’s well known that the Queen and King had disagreed vehemently with Haakon’s desire to Mette-Marit and the prince had to conduct a substantial public relations campaign to end up ensuring the success of his desire to marry Mette-Marit. As a result, the Queen and King and courtiers are delicately picking their way around him and yet are quietly determined to make him see reason that a divorce would be best for him and his future. A divorce between the couple would be the first in Norway’s history and if the rumors of an affair between the princess and an American business executive are true, there is reason to believe that the royal family will be ruthless in making sure that Mette-Marit does not benefit from the marriage by getting a large settlement and it is viewed that Queen Sonja will make sure that Mette-Marit does not receive a home of her own at the expense of the prince and will make sure that the children are primarily raised by Haakon.

“The Queen disliked Mette-Marit from the first and if it is true that Haakon has had to suffer because of infidelity on the part of Mette-Marit, the Queen will make sure Mette-Marit never benefits via a large settlement, courtesy title, and free housing” whispers one source, “The king has had to answer for Mette-Marit’s behavior on more than one occasion and it would be the last straw for the King to have his son cheated on by her.” There has been hostility developing from long held resentment and some are even hoping for a divorce. The courtiers have resented the princess, not just because of her commoner status, but that there was a lot of work required to make her acceptable to the public. It would be one of the biggest slaps in the face if the woman they worked so hard to become acceptable to the people of Norway and the world ended up not just proving them right (in their views about her unsuitability), but also hurting the man who believed in her the most. Titled aristocrats who Haakon bypassed as possible marriage candidates were miffed and resentful (at best, hostile and hateful at worst) in that they are required by protocol to defer to her in many areas and show respect and obedience in public.

If there is a divorce it would be a major letdown; the princess has been considered an example to troubled women that there is always a second chance and her romance and marriage has been considered a major story of redemption, not just sacrifice. The couple has been married for twelve years and a split could traumatize her young son Marius who has had the palace as his home and to go from the royal palace to a different living environment (and lifestyle) would likely cause horrible emotional and psychological damage, along with the regular pain that any divorce brings. Haakon has been a source of great emotional support as a father and since the young boy has entered adolescence a strong father figure is needed. To lose Haakon would be losing the only father he has known, in an in wedlock stable manner.

Duke William and Duchess Kate are triggering a major backlash from an increasingly poverty stricken world of the taxpayers with the open enjoyment of privileged royal prerogatives by the ducal couple. It’s been a contradictory two years since the ducal couple married. On one hand they made a fabulous debut on the world stage, but in Britain, through their increasing negligence of their duties and responsibility to appear before the public, the impression they are sending is that they are too busy to spend public money to spend time with the public.

This enjoyment of the privileged royal lifestyle has its roots during the time when Kate first got involved with William back in St. Andrews. Unlike William, Kate had a comfortable upbringing with well off, indulgent parents who ensure she would want for nothing while at university, but it was nothing compared to the lifestyle that was led by the royal family. They had met in class due to the fact that both had planned to major in History of Art, but that acquaintance became strained after William switched his major to Geography to better understand the geography of the world he would travel on behalf of the Crown. She became part of his set, not the center, but close enough to observe the way St. Andrews went out of their way to accommodate William to ensure his safety and privacy and see how he and his friends enjoyed privileges beyond anything that she had otherwise seen.

William’s royal life has been on of contradictions in the way he has lived, particularly the odd and intriguing way the royal family has balanced the comforts they enjoy recreationally and the comforts they enjoy while traveling around the world. The royals have lived in a lavishness of surroundings according to medieval standards, in palaces decorated by generations of royals who have lived before him and the modern pampering that many of the world’s wealthiest enjoy when traveling for business or on vacation. William has had the experience of both combined and this has inured him to seeing his life the way others who live more modestly view his environment.

His aristocratic circle live just as grandly and have just as high expectations in how they are groomed to maintain the family traditions and estates, take their lives just as for granted, no matter how career oriented many of them are, careers being a modern way of passing time until they are called upon to inherit both their titles and responsibilities. As a result a lot of them have had problems not just relating to normal people, but how normal people see their lifestyle. Unlike William who is used to the many privileges as tools to be used as either a reward for hard graft or way to impress a visiting delegate, many Britons see the privileges as tools used by the royal family for pleasure and entertainment, a viewpoint that has been reinforced by many of the York family antics.

Kate continued to move in the fringes of the social set, dating a variety of young men, among them the notable Rupert Finch who later left St. Andrews to go to a different university and Kate, liking St. Andrews, decided to stay. Meanwhile William dated a fellow member of his set, a sweet country girl named Carly Massy-Birch; Carly had the humorous honor of being known as having ‘the best bottom of first year students’ and it lasted for several weeks with Carly making the prince pasta dinners regularly.

The end of the relationship was friendly and the Prince and Carly remain friends. Kate had two known former lovers, one being Willam Marx (who has since gone on to work as a journalist covering the military operations conducted in Iraq) and she was currently dating Rupert Finch (who has since become a lawyer). Despite the whitewashing of her romantic history, Kate was known to be very friendly to the gentleman who surrounded her, even once working as a member of an all female crew for wealthy executives/playboys during one summer.

It wasn’t until she had sashayed down the runway at the student charity show that William noticed her as more than a fringe member of his set and apparently after discreet inquiries as to whether or not she had a discreet personality, William’s close friend Fergus reassured the prince and from then on, the courtship began. Kate and William kept their relationship a secret except among the most trusted of the prince’s friends, moving Kate to the center of the prince’s focus. Kate’s sister Pippa is believed to be the only member of the Middleton family who was aware that there was a romantic relationship, the rest of the Middletons believing that it was a close friendship, nothing more.

Kate, like other students, had lived in one of the many dorm rooms and while the Queen was fine with William moving off campus, there was a brief moment when the Queen wasn’t sure if letting friends move in with William was a good idea for reasons of security. St. Andrews had worked hard at great expense to create reinforced doors and bulletproof windows added to the dorm where the student prince would be living. Being that Kate had recently become his girlfriend, William decided to invite Kate to live with him.

“The Queen was initially against the idea of William moving off campus, since the university had gone to a great deal of trouble to secure the premises and ensure that he would have as normal an experience as possible as a student, which was a main reason he wanted to go to St. Andrews,” whispers an insider, “but him moving off campus was considered a somewhat sensible move in the end and the Queen gave her permission hoping it would make the student prince more sociable with the villagers and prep him for public life, unfortunately that did not become the case.”

In a move that unsettled William’s circle of friends, the newly developing relationship swiftly moved to another level when Kate moved in with William and a few handpicked friends into an off campus flat. Kate became ensconced in the bosom of William’s university home life and began to cosset him, recreating the home environment she had enjoyed as a child. As a result, William enjoyed the domestic arrangements of a home environment he had never experienced. William, enamored of Kate’s cosseting, ignored the outside world when he wasn’t at school, causing concerns that the prince was cutting himself off from his friends that often acted as a secure support network to help the prince and keep him connected to student life, the point of university.

Despite the early familiarity, Kate was still new to the central social world of William’s life and friends weren’t sure if William was making the right choice in getting intimately involved so soon and letting Kate get so involved in his private social life that closely blended with his royal life. Kate started to tag along as William went about his social life and became something of a royal groupie, making things mildly tense among his set he had known since birth and friendships he had developed at Eton. Kate was a lot of fun, but it wasn’t just a lack of pedigree, but a lack of knowing anything about her. As a result his established set wasn’t sure how to regard her. She was his girlfriend, but they noticed that she got too comfortable in William’s regal standard of vacationing.

There were ruffled palace feathers when the palace heard the news that William had allowed his girlfriend of a few weeks to move in with him, seen as both a moral failing on the part of the future Head of the Church of England and an unhealthily fast step in view of the fact that William was choosing such a person unknown to the palace to move in with him. The Queen gave consent to the move and paid for the rent of the flat and the set up of secure reinforcements, but the Queen was startled to hear that Kate had moved in, before the palace had a chance to know and run a background check to ensure that she would not be a threat to his safety or bring unsavory types around him. The usually thrifty Queen was also annoyed that she wasn’t paying for just her grandson and a couple of equally wealthy friends, but also a young woman who, with no previous ties, had apparently insinuated herself into her grandson’s personal life.

Yet, Kate was ensconced and had begun to go to holidays on the prince’s dime and once she was touted as the prince’s official girlfriend, there was no way to extract her from the house where she lived with William without causing a potential fuss. If Kate had been kicked out for not paying her own way, the palace would have been seen as being snobbish and greedy while to move her back on campus would cause the press to become determined to find out more and potentially disrupt campus life while trying for photos and paying for information. So Kate remained in the cottage and continued her studies while adjusting to notoriety.

The fact that Kate wasn’t paying any rent or other expenses became a source of awkward resentment, since Kate was already beginning to show she felt she was right where she belonged and even benefited from William’s agreement with the press to not ask students for information and pictures and as a result, Kate was protected by proxy from media intrusion. To many friends of the prince, this was a worrying signal that showed a possible future tendency to purloin things that were granted to the prince by the Queen for herself, already taking certain royal prerogatives upon herself for her own benefit. As the relationship continued, she started to get into the habit of staying as close to the prince as possible during social gatherings, acting mildly territorial. This, combined with a tendency to enjoy too much the lifestyle the prince was engaging in while on holiday, convinced some that Kate was going from groupie to greedy.

Nothing surprised the aristocrats than when Kate was among the invited to Buckingham Palace to celebrate the milestone of his 21st birthday party. She wasn’t listed officially as his date, but it was general knowledge that Kate and the prince enjoyed an intimate life off campus. She attended with several friends and became so enamored that she was wide-eyed at the first experience of the royal family’s private celebrations. Few Britons have been past the gated entrance to the intimate private areas of the palace and she was apparently eager to enjoy herself. Yet, Kate had problems starting from the fact that outside of St. Andrews, William wasn’t making her his first priority. The many other aristocrats had heard of her and had heard that she had been enjoying free housing at palace expense and there were a lot of courtiers who had already established bad opinions of her.

William spent the entire evening chatting with his best friend Jecca Craig and Kate apparently spent the night fuming at what she viewed as a major snub. By then she was used to being the center of his attention (attention increasingly fixated on her and not his studies) and reportedly left in a furious huff. Later William had the palace publicly deny any romance between Jecca and himself, something that was unprecedented, something done to placate Kate. He also indulged her in another holiday where he pampered her and apparently they made up. During this time Kate became protected from the press since it was then clear that William and Kate were serious about each other and William wanted to prevent his beloved from being harangued by the media. It wasn’t just by tacit agreement that Kate would be left alone to go about her business, but an open order that Kate enjoy the same benefits that the press had agreed to give him. As time went by, she vacationed with him, went on weekends to country estates with him, and was this time a firmly established girlfriend and a kind of university consort to him.

In time his friends noticed that she went from enjoying, to expecting the best rooms and when she stood with him, expected to have others defer to her and was mildly hostile to the women of the country set who didn’t defer to her apparent wish that they ask permission to speak to and spend time with William. She soon perfected what his set refers to as her now famously known ‘death stare’ and developed an annoying habit of expressing her opinions on the actions and intentions of other people. Kate’s particular sense of belonging developed from enjoying the fun times to a mildly regal attitude, which irritated several aristocrats because she often acted as if she were there in her own right, which caused friction between William and his friends, which resulted in William developing a far more distrustful and confused perspective of his longtime friends, something that caused a wave of worry that William was adopting the mistrustful alienation that often plagued his mother in her relations with the royal court.

It was obvious at that point to the courtiers and William’s aristocratic fellow students that they were dealing with either another future Fergie (the disgraced former Duchess of York) or an unusually tenacious social climber with jewels on her mind and yet, instead of demanding that Kate move out on her own, into her own apartment or back to the student dorms, the royal family tried to keep a long term perspective and decided to wait the rest of William’s university years out. In the meantime the student prince started slipping in his grades and became increasingly alienated and mistrustful while Kate enjoyed his recreational life of skiing at posh resorts and tropical beaches, joining him on a yacht and private jets. When she and William weren’t at school, they were known to be going out to clubs, sometimes flying down to London.

After graduation (where William graduated with honors) Kate moved to her own flat in London and William took up residence at Clarence House, the main residence of Prince Charles. Despite Kate’s job at Jigsaw, much of her time was spent at Clarence House where William and Kate continued their intimate relationship, sometimes dining privately in William’s suite. When not there, William would spend time with Kate at her flat or at the home of the Middleton family in Berkshire, treating Michael and Carole as surrogate parents and Pippa and James as siblings by association. Kate would work while William was in training to become an officer, but there were minor skirmishes with the media, who took the view that since his university years were over, so was the restraint that the press had chafed under for so long. After a few photographers photographed Kate on a bus, William unnerved and irritated Charles by requesting that Kate receive royal security officers of her own, but Charles outright refused (with the support of the Queen and courtiers) to provide bodyguards paid for by the state because of Kate’s status as a girlfriend, who was not a member of the royal family or a visiting dignitary.

William was disappointed, but was forced to accept it, but the fact that it was even suggested was considered going too far. Kate had enjoyed the benefits of being associated with the prince and it was believed that at that point Kate herself believed she should enjoy royal security officers, maintained at taxpayer expense. The fact that such a fuss had been made over harmless photographs cause the palace to realize just how used to press restraint Kate had gotten via William; it was undeniable that Kate had used William’s press agreement for herself. The idea of Kate being entitled to royal protection was making it clear that Kate wasn’t just content to be a girlfriend, but determined to enjoy the same residual media restraint that was supposed to be for William, not Kate or any others. Her outraged reaction towards the media was a clear sign that Kate was considering herself semi-royal and the creation of an odd title official girlfriend harkened in the minds of many aristocrats as the same as official mistress and caused a lot of crude remarks about just what it was that really kept William’s attention.

As royal girlfriend Kate started to enjoy the benefits of royal association, among them the free clothes from high street designer Issa and in addition to occasional discounts, she was experiencing the heady treatment that came from dating a prince. After her appearance at William’s Sandhurst graduation ceremony, she was touted as official girlfriend (something that had not been bestowed on any young woman before her) and with it came experiences that she had only tasted in her student life with William. She was accepted to the best clubs, seated in the VIP areas, and treated with extreme deference while William doted on her. It became controversial when, after 2007, William and Kate ended the relationship, but got back together with the private understanding that they would marry in after a number of years.

She quit work at Jigsaw (where she had been granted unprecedented compassionate leave) and spent the next couple of years aimlessly enjoying the lifestyle of the idle rich and famous, earning her the nickname “Waity Katie.” She continued to indulge in the VIP lifestyle as a royal by association and William became increasingly disinterested in his role of RAF rescue pilot and more reacquainted with the jet setting, freewheeling lifestyle he had enjoyed as a student. Kate was on his arm at places such as Bouji, Mahiki, and The Box, where the couple would indulge in shots of liquor and mixed drinks. During the wintry months the couple would be seen on yachts and at island paradise resorts, such as Mustique and Necker Island. When not in London clubs or at tropical retreats, Kate could be seen merrily shopping alone at her favorite shops and enjoying leisurely lunches while wait staff would hover around solicitously. Her father Michael and mother Carole continued to pay for her carefree lifestyle, because of their ownership of fairly successful party supply business Party Pieces.

Over time, her closet at her flat began to fill with free clothes given to her by designer Issa and she enjoyed a steady stream of new designs, providing free international advertising since Kate was so frequently photographed by the press and seen by the public around the world. This blatant enjoyment of the gratuities were seen by insiders as an exploitation by Kate of her ‘position’ as ‘official girlfriend’ of the prince (seen by some as a similarity of the age old position of ‘official mistress’ that mistresses of past kings held) and had resulted in the termination of relationships in the past, but oddly William saw it was harmless and continued to date Kate.

It is not apparent that William told the palace of his promise to marry Kate, but if he had, there is uncertainty as to whether or not Kate would have listened to warnings to not act in ways that might be seen as benefiting from her current status and learning restraint would have prepared her for her future status. Since there is no definitive proof that the palace was informed of William’s choice, it can be safely assumed that Kate was not told anything since surely a word from the palace would have resulted in Kate sending many free things back. Or not. By 2010 it was well established that Kate was openly benefiting from her position as ‘official girlfriend’ and William was either unaware of what the public was seeing or there was an overly indulgent side of him that was certainly enabling her to get away with what past girlfriends of princes in the past never got away with.

Enjoying the perks that come from royal association is practically an ancient tradition, but a tradition held by mistresses, not potential wives and had made many courtiers seriously wonder just what it was that William was thinking, letting it go on. It’s no secret that the Duchess of Cornwall, while still mistress to the Prince of Wales, enjoyed the jewels and comforts that being a mistress brought, but that was mainly because Camilla was abiding by the prerogatives of being a mistress, not a potential or future wife and there was still surprise that Camilla even got the ring. One insider states bluntly “Kate’s free acceptance of the material benefits of royal association was seen that she was getting well compensated for her ‘services’ if you see what I’m trying to say. It ill behooves a young lady who wants to be taken seriously as decent if she’s seen accompanying, to put it delicately, William to these places and then later on getting mounds of dresses and discounts on leases for luxury cars.” Kate’s open acceptance and what was seen as a rapidly developing sense of entitlement of privilege simply by being his girlfriend began to cause resentment among William’s set mainly since many of them were sometimes chided just for being seen to benefit from friendship with the prince.

After the 2012 topless scandal in France, a scandal that had dominated worldwide media and had usurped coverage of the ducal couple’s trip to the Far East (on behalf of the Queen to celebrate the milestone of the Diamond Jubilee); after the tour the ducal couple returned to England, Kate to her family, and William (presumably) to the palace to explain himself. He had then (so it is believed) to have traveled with friends on a hunting trip when the news of Kate’s hospitalization broke. After a few days he hurried to the bedside of his wife, where he presumably received the joyous news of his wife’s pregnancy. After her family visited, Kate was soon released and returned home to the palace.

The circumstances surrounding the pregnancy are odd and certain behavior by the Duchess suggest that something was hidden behind closed doors by the ducal couple. The pregnancy was announced just after the news burst that the Duchess had been rushed to the hospital for an emergency set of medical treatment. It wasn’t until a few days later that Duchess Kate had been expecting for the past couple of weeks and was suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarium (commonly known as “HG” the term I will use for the article), a medical condition a small percentage of pregnant women suffer from. The illness causes excessive vomiting, watery bowels, triggering dehydration that does often result in hospitalization and emergency treatment to avoid death. Pregnant women who are afflicted are encouraged to get bed rest and often vomiting can become almost hourly.

Despite the serious nature of the illness and the known fact that it takes a serious toll on the weight and appetite of the sufferer, Kate had performed a duty at an awards ceremony for athletes who had performed in the Olympics and straightaway after traveled to the island of Mustique for a vacation in the tropical paradise. This put doubt into the minds of people who had previously been sympathetic to her presumed condition. Sufferers of HG stated flatly that when they had suffered from the syndrome, they had been bedridden for weeks, if not full months and had had to stay near the bathroom to throw up and frequently had to (in one extreme case) avoid sunlight to avoid triggering a bout of vomiting. Others mentioned how they were unable to go out and about and Kate’s oddly carefree, almost cavalier recovery was the first odd sign that the Duchess was oddly robust enough for a vacation, but unable to handle a public appearance. She stayed for a total of two weeks.

During the vacation someone managed to snap a photo of the Duchess while walking on the beach with William and people already began to comment about how her ‘bump’ was nothing more than a slight curve, like the bloat that most get when they are full from eating, nothing like that of a pregnant woman with only six months to go. The published photo triggered threats of lawsuits and other forms of legal retaliation, but the seed of doubt that had been planted (from the Duchess’ seeming quick recovery from HG) began to sprout. She provoked severer criticism for taking a vacation, during a time when the palace had announced that the Duchess would be lowering the number of appearances for the sake of her health and to nurture her pregnancy.

As time went by and the number of appearances dwindled, the Duchess became a focus for the paparazzi who photographed her shopping, dining, strolling about the city as her pregnancy progressed. Despite the growth of her belly, the Duchess did not alter her habit of wearing wedges and stiletto heels (two favorite forms of footwear for the Duchess) and the rest of her body did not fill out as the months passed. She spent much of her time also enjoying unusually balanced posture and wore her favorite skinny jeans, something many pregnant women set aside for their pregnancy and opt for pants with a stretched waistband and there were rumors of the inconsistency in the size of her belly. People whispered that the Duchess was watching her weight and dieting, even though pregnant women are encouraged to gain weight to properly feed the developing child and she continued to wear decidedly non-maternity tailored clothing.

The months progressed and the Duchess slowly but surely eliminated her appearances and it’s now known that much of her time was spent with her family at the new manor house in Berkshire. In mid-July the speculation in Britain reached fever pitch as the due date approached, but it soon passed and fresh calculations were made. The timeline provided by the palace was how the due date was measured and agreed upon, but as two weeks passed, nothing happened. The press and public waited around patiently while the Duchess waited for her labor to begin, while in Berkshire with a helicopter on standby. After a few more days, as the press began to express impatience and borderline disgust, the Duchess was rushed via a back entrance to the hospital and her labor began.

After over ten hours, the Duchess was believed to have given birth to a baby boy, who was named Prince George and the nation rejoiced with magazine covers and jubilation. The way the birth was done, according to royal protocol that ensures that the heir is born ‘of the body’ of the legitimate wife, requires that the Home Secretary be present during the birth as an official witness on behalf of the royal family. That the birth was explained as simply overdue and that the Duchess was rushed to the hospital within days of the Home Secretary’s absence (the Home Secretary travels with the Court) is convenient if the couple wanted to bypass the presence of the secretary; the couple is legend for violating protocol, but this particular procedure is done to prevent any challenge to the legitimacy of the heir, for example, questionable parentage.

Suddenly, the couple hurried back to Berkshire with their newborn son and suddenly an inside drama was played out. Despite the usual protocol of the Queen being the first to visit after the birth, the couple retreated to Middleton Manor for the Duchess to recuperate and because the Queen was at Balmoral at the time of the birth, the Queen was unable to meet her great-grandson for several weeks. No members of the royal family called upon the Middleton family to offer congratulations and see the infant, a first sign that all was not well between the palace and the Cambridge couple. Despite the possible expectations of the Middletons and ducal couple, the Sovereign did not interrupt her holiday to arrive back at Buckingham Palace or travel to Berkshire to see the newest addition to her family. It was touted as Kate wanting to be around her family, to spend time with her son so her family could be the first, but the palace didn’t react and it was a chillingly indifferent response to the birth of a royal prince. It was as if little George wasn’t important to the royal family and that in and of itself was a sign that something was terribly wrong about the circumstances of the birth.

The first candid photo of the Duchess was snapped exiting a grocery store with her cart filled to the brim with frozen food and alcohol, she looked drastically different from the slightly full-bellied new mother who had just had a child. She looked rail thin, wearing her trademark tight skinny jeans and a blouse with a sweater. If the Duchess was feeding her son breast milk, to add alcohol to her diet would in fact be introducing alcohol into her newly born child, which would a horrific act for a new mother. William moved quickly to establish the boundaries he expected the press to abide by. He threatened the media with the full force of the law and instead of an interview talking about his happiness as a new father with Kate by his side; there was complete silence. Over the next couple of weeks Prince William made cryptic comments about his son, but there was nothing definitive described about George. There were no talks about the child’s physical features or anything of substance, just occasional asides mentioned during appearances. During that time, the couple had a set of photos done, surprising in their informality taken by Michael and Michael was granted the rights to the photos, ensuring the complete ownership of the royalties that the photo would generate would benefit the Middleton family.

Physiologically the Duchess has shown little effects of a strenuous labor, culminating in the birth of a nine-pound child. The Duchess’ boyish figure has been a trademark of her persona and fashion status, but even the most open minded supporter would be hard pressed to think that a woman who has given a full natural birth to a nine pound child could so quickly begin wearing form fitting skinny jeans and not cause possible health problems, in addition to the fact that it takes a long time for women to recuperate from the pain of having given birth. To lose weight quickly and go back to her natural weight in a short period of time is considered completely impossible. Strained muscles, sagging skin, and stretch marks would be evident and at her recent engagement she was snapped as her shirt flew up as she participated in a small sports event and has ended up showing that she has not been affected physically by her pregnancy, if at all.

Previously not even considered, the Duke and Duchess are coming under a cloud of suspicion by various Internet writers about the possibility that they used a surrogate to carry and bear Prince George. Various Internet theorists are writing about the possibility that Duchess Kate did not conceive and carry her own son. Even commentary in the comments section of the Daily Mail has a comment on occasion mocking the idea that Duchess Kate was even pregnant. When the engagement was announced, there was an interview with the couple that was then beaming about the impending nuptials and talking about the circumstances of the proposal and their future plans. Interestingly, there was no interview after the announcement of the pregnancy and there has not been any formal interview so the nation could be told of the newborn heir, the third in line. This is also a different way of things being done and the ducal couple has raised new suspicions.
